Project Description
The Airport Atrium building in Torrance, CA is a multi-story 97,000 square-foot Class A office building. This beautiful building includes a 4-story glass atrium with a feature fountain and large office spaces for tenant use.
In 2015, Athena Engineering was contracted by the new owners of the building to perform on-site surveys for existing HVAC equipment, build as-builts, and design energy measures to achieve new HVAC efficiencies. Following the evaluation, our building automation and energy management group designed and installed a new direct digital control system to replace the existing pneumatic controls. The system selected was the EcoStruxure by Schneider Electric platform which allowed full integration with a new power management module designed by Athena Engineering. Overall, the new system included a new building automation system, power metering, CO2 Demand Control, and Variable Air Volume box control. In addition, Athena Engineering’s Construction division installed new HVAC units, a new boiler system with high-efficiency staged equipment, and variable frequency drives.
As part of the integration of the new energy management measures, Athena Engineering also facilitated utility evaluation and rebates with Southern California Edison and Southern California Gas, helping the facility achieve significant cost savings over the original costs.
