“The whole system came out and went back in inside a 20-day window.”
Kaiser’s Chemical Dependency Recovery Program in Fontana provides inpatient and outpatient substance-abuse treatment, including detox, partial hospitalization, and counseling, for people in the middle of getting well. Kaiser hired Athena on a design-build basis to remove and replace the building’s entire HVAC system. We handled the mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and structural engineering, then served as prime contractor and lead through construction.
We took out twenty-one roof-mounted fan coils, the chilled- and hot-water roof piping and supports, and the piping in the central plant, and replaced all of it with twenty-one packaged heat pumps, ranging from 3 to 7.5 tons and sized to each zone. That move retired the central hydronic plant entirely, leaving the building with a simpler, distributed system that’s easier to run and maintain.
We pulled the old pneumatic controls and brought the building onto a new BACnet Schneider Electric StruxureWare automation system, then added new galvanized ductwork, smoke detectors, and a full test-and-balance and commissioning to close it out.
All of it happened in a 20-day window — two crane lifts and a tightly choreographed sequence of equipment shutdowns let us swap the system fast, with care for a facility where the treatment couldn’t stop.
It’s one of several jobs Kaiser has trusted to Athena, alongside the Ambulatory Surgery Center build-out and the Medical Office Building mechanical replacement at its Ontario and Inglewood campuses.
