Sixty-one provider offices. Sixty exam rooms. Eighteen specialties β from cardiology and oncology to OB/GYN and urgent care. When Kaiser Permanente set out to expand care at its Ontario Medical Center, that’s what got built, and Athena delivered all of it turn-key.
Kaiser Ontario Medical Center is a 224-bed hospital serving the west end of San Bernardino County. By the back half of 2016, Kaiser had awarded Athena three design-build projects there β this was one of them, covering design and construction across the 160,000-square-foot complex of medical offices on the campus. When a health system that size gives you three jobs in six months, it’s because the first one went the way it was supposed to.
The $1.5 million scope started long before anyone swung a hammer.
The $1.5 million scope started long before anyone swung a hammer. As prime contractor, Athena led the full 3D BIM preconstruction coordination β mechanical, electrical, plumbing, structural steel, fire sprinkler, and medical gas, every trade in the model before it ever reached the field. Our team ran the constructability analysis and budget validation that built the MEP basis of design, so the trades showed up to a plan that actually fit together.

Then we built it. The work included a 37,795-square-foot infill of shelled space in Medical Office Building (MOB) D, a 3,431-square-foot remodel in MOB A, and a 3,446-square-foot remodel of existing space in MOB D β new offices and exam rooms built to suit Kaiser’s service expansion across those eighteen specialties. All of it under OSHPD (now HCAI) review β the regulatory bar California holds healthcare construction to, and the reason a lot of contractors won’t touch this work at all.
Athena self-performed the mechanical HVAC and owned the schedule from preconstruction through turnover. Kaiser got a finished building, ready for patients β and came back for the next two.
