Adventist Health Montebello (formerly Beverly Hospital) is a 102-bed general medical and surgical hospital in Montebello. Its emergency room sees more than 15,000 patients a year. Athena’s scope across this campus is the building automation: the controls layer that runs the hospital’s mechanical systems.
Ted Jacobs Engineering, the mechanical engineer, brought us in to convert the hospital and its outlying buildings from pneumatic controls to DDC. You can’t take a working hospital down all at once, so we built the conversion in phases, bringing areas and buildings onto the new system as their renovations came up. The platform is a BACnet-based EcoStruxure system with an open, expandable front end — so every future expansion, renovation, or addition drops onto it without a forklift upgrade. For the first phase, we helped Ted Jacobs Engineering produce the bridging documents for OSHPD approval, then delivered the first conversion as a design-build: the building automation for a laboratory wing under renovation.
From there, Athena stayed on the campus. Hired both directly by the hospital and on major projects with Brascia Builders, we carried the same EcoStruxure platform into the Emergency Care Center expansion and a new MRI suite. The ED project added cardiac and stroke care, a pediatric emergency unit, ambulance canopy bays, and airborne isolation rooms that have to hold their pressure, all brought onto the automation system we’d already set as the campus standard.
A hospital gets modernized one wing at a time. Its controls were built to grow the same way.
