Kaiser Permanente’s Ontario Medical Center anchors acute care for the west end of San Bernardino County. Kaiser awarded Athena three design-build projects on the campus in close succession; this one, the Ambulatory Surgery Center, was awarded in 2017 and completed in 2019. It’s a single-story, fully built-out suite of operating rooms, recovery, and support space. On this one, we ran it as prime.
The $1.2 million scope put us in the lead chair.
The $1.2 million scope put us in the lead chair. We ran full 3D BIM pre-construction coordination across every trade on the job — mechanical, electrical, plumbing, structural steel, fire sprinkler, and medical gas — and carried the constructibility analysis and budget validation through preconstruction. We owned the schedule and turned the project over turnkey.
We installed new HVAC on the first floor and built two new operating rooms, one of them carved from the building’s former pre-op and recovery area, about 2,850 square feet of new OR space. The operating-room ceiling, by Guardian Ceiling Systems, is a single integrated assembly: laminar-flow diffusers, HEPA filtration, LED fixtures, and structural boom supports in one system. In an OR, that ceiling is the air: laminar flow and HEPA hold the sterile field, and we self-performed the mechanical HVAC behind it.
It was one of three we delivered for Kaiser at Ontario in the same stretch, alongside the Outpatient Medical Office Expansion and the OR/IR Shelled Space Build-Out.
Client: Kaiser Permanente. Prime Contractor: Athena Engineering. Operating-room ceiling system: Guardian Ceiling Systems.
