Project Description

Opening in 1937, El Sereno Middle School originally operated as a six-year high school, formally known as Woodrow Wilson High School. In 1969, this historic campus took over the name El Sereno Middle School. This public middle school, located in East Los Angeles CA, is home to 1,358 students, ranging from sixth to the eighth grades. Athena Engineering, Inc. completed this project under a job order contract with Los Angeles Unified School District.

The scope of work for this project included accessibility upgrades to the bleachers that surrounded the football and track field, along with upgrades to the inside of a boys and girls restroom. Athena Engineering and our team of subcontractors replaced an existing concrete stair aisle and replaced sections of the concrete bleachers to provide handicap accessible sitting areas. We removed all of the existing wood planking that served as the seating for the bleachers, and installed new aluminum planks designed for bleacher seating. The scope of work inside the restrooms included providing and installing all new accessible toilets, lavatories and accessories, to provide ADA accessible restrooms, the installation of a new TMP ramp to provide safe handicap access, and also installing a new Hi-Lo accessible drinking fountain. This project also included removing and replacing AC paving to provide an accessible path of travel to and from the upgraded restrooms and the newly accessible bleacher area.
