On a building designed around natural ventilation and daylight, the controls have to work with the architecture, not override it.
The School of Career and Technical Education gave Los Angeles Southwest College a signature building — 53,655 square feet of hands-on training space wrapped in glass and open-air corridors, so the work happening inside is visible from the moment you walk up. Athena assisted in the design and served as the controls integrator for the new building.
Inside are classrooms, the college’s Environmental and Technical Science Program, Business Department offices, and a Career and Workforce Development Center. The building earned LEED Platinum from the U.S. Green Building Council, the program’s highest rating, built around open-air, naturally ventilated corridors that pull in daylight and hold down energy use.

On a building designed around natural ventilation and daylight, the controls have to work with the architecture. As controls integrator, we tied the systems together so the mechanical equipment runs only when the open-air design needs help holding conditions. That coordination is part of what a Platinum rating takes.
It’s one of our projects on the Los Angeles Southwest campus, where we also wrote the controls and sequences for the central plant that heats and cools the site. For a full-tour check out this video produced by students.
