Sally Ride Elementary School (formerly LAUSD CRES #21) is a ground-up, 52,500-square-foot K–5 academy on a tight 2.7-acre urban site for the Los Angeles Unified School District. Twenty-seven classrooms, administrative offices, a joint-use multipurpose space, food service, and a library, stacked over two levels for roughly 650 students. Pinner Construction was the general contractor on the $28.6 million build. We self-performed the mechanical HVAC and building automation.

On a dense site, the roof did double duty — our packaged units were laid out to share it with 12,500 square feet of solar.

We installed unitary packaged equipment with VAV and commercial zoning, all on full BACnet DDC controls. In a school, zoning is comfort and energy at once: 27 classrooms don’t fill and empty on the same schedule, and a daylit room asks less of the system than the one beside it. The controls hold each space on its own terms. On a dense site, the roof did double duty — our packaged units were laid out to share it with 12,500 square feet of solar.

The campus reached 50 CHPS points, the Collaborative for High Performance Schools benchmark for California classrooms. Balanced daylighting across 65% of the program spaces carries much of the energy load; our equipment and controls were sized to run lean against it and keep classroom air where it needs to be for young kids.

It was a project labor agreement build, union work of the kind our field crews are made for.
