The Hyperion Advanced Water Purification Facility is LA Sanitation & Environment’s proof of concept for the city’s Hyperion 2035 goal: recycling 100% of its wastewater. The demonstration plant purifies 1.5 million gallons a day, sending recycled water to LAX and back into Hyperion’s own operations. Athena worked on it as a mechanical subcontractor to Walsh Construction, with a focused scope: the HVAC for the Advanced Treatment Building.
The Advanced Treatment Building is where the purification process runs, and Athena provided its mechanical ventilation start to finish. We installed two 10-ton split-system air handlers with their condensing units, VRF ceiling cassettes for the electrical and control spaces, four exhaust fans, make-up air louvers, and a full test-and-balance. Because the building sits in a corrosive water-treatment environment, the ductwork serving it was built in 304 stainless steel rather than ordinary galvanized.
On a job this size, one scope is a small part of a very large whole — dozens of trades, years of coordination, thousands of decisions that all have to line up. We bid the work in 2021, and the facility came online in 2026. Public works moves carefully, and every piece has to land for the whole thing to work. Ours did.
