El Rancho Charter School in Anaheim added a new 25,000-square-foot Athletics and Science building to its campus, and Bernards Builders brought Athena in for the mechanical HVAC and building automation controls. The single-story building, CMU with structural steel and wood-stud framing, pairs a main gymnasium, complete with bleachers and an adjacent dance and aerobics studio, with five science classrooms, staff offices, storage, and restrooms. The gym seats about 750 and holds up to 1,200.
A gym and a science lab are two opposite problems — one big open volume, one room that needs fume exhaust — and they share a building.
Two parts of the building pull in opposite directions. A gymnasium is a big open volume that has to stay comfortable whether it’s empty or packed with a crowd — while the science classrooms need steady ventilation and fume exhaust for lab work. We served both with 14 new rooftop package units, all on new digital controls, and outfitted the lab area with fume exhaust hoods for the science classes.
Minor site demolition cleared room for the new building, and the whole job came together in 13 months.
