A Typical Week

What you'll actually do.

You're placed on a real project from day one. Your mentor walks you in, then expects you to keep up. The work coincides with what you're learning in class — that's the point.

Project work

  • Department-specific tasks on the projects you're assigned to
  • Document control — submittals, RFIs, drawing reviews
  • Subcontractor coordination
  • Progress meetings with the PM and trades
  • Billing and project accounting basics
  • BAS programming and graphics if you land on the controls side
  • Jobsite walks and on-site meetings with the field

Company life

  • Monthly safety meetings
  • Staff meetings — you're part of the company, not separate from it
  • Vendor lunch-and-learns and product training
  • Summer BBQs, fantasy football, birthday and pizza parties
  • The relationships that make the rest of it actually work

From the Source

From intern to Project Executive.

Chris Movsesian started his construction career here as an intern while earning his Construction Engineering and Management degree at Cal Poly Pomona. He joined full-time as a Project Engineer in 2017. He runs construction projects for us now as a Project Executive. The arc isn't promised — but it's not unusual either, and there's real room to grow. Here's how he describes the start:

"This internship program is really nice for students who are in college or about to graduate from college because the hours are flexible and the things you learn on the job coincide with what you learn in the classroom. If you ever have a question or need a second opinion about something, you will never feel scared to ask because everyone is very helpful and has an ‘open-door’ relationship."

"Athena Engineering believes in investing in their workers and you can see that from the quality of work that is produced. I never felt like a number or just another employee — even as an intern you are treated as a person and will be given a lot of responsibilities."

"Aside from the work you will quickly become a part of the company family by being involved in different social activities like summer BBQs, fantasy football leagues, birthday parties, pizza parties and so much more, which is important to have in order to build relationships with your coworkers. It really makes it fun to come to work every day and helps you enjoy what you are doing."
