Project Description

This project involved the new construction of a visual and performing arts high school in Los Angeles. The campus is within the Los Angeles Unified School District and consists of nine buildings and a central plant.

Athena Engineering, Inc. was responsible for the installation of an Energy Management System consisting of Variable Air Volume (VAV) Air Handling Units (AHUs) and a full hydronic central plant. All control components are integrated into a graphical user interface with dynamic real-time graphics and crystallized reports. Trend data is monitored and recorded to efficiently control the building automation system.

Our team took an innovative approach to address the energy needs and aesthetic considerations of the facilities:

  • Classrooms are controlled by VAV supply and return boxes that track airflow in order to control pressure in the zones.
  • Single zone areas that are not classrooms are controlled by packaged air conditioning units or hydronic fan coil units.
  • The central plant is controlled by chillers and boilers that anticipate building load to determine how much service is needed.
  • The library is controlled by under floor unit terminals designed to heat and cool the space from sidewall vents to maintain the aesthetic architecture of this unique building, which is constructed primarily of glass.
